In his breakthrough work ‘Serious Play‘, Dr. Michael Schrage from MIT presented the significance of Models as ways of thinking. This is interesting to notice that Models even a visual one like a diagram can help us comprehend the aspect better and therefore it in turn influences us. He also points out how great organizations always made modeling and simulation part of their strategy which helped them sustain. This is the consideration we make here as Models and simulation as aids for thinking process.
We believe agility in the new world in systems and products would be largely driven by Product-Service Systems. These will be more closer to the concept of Cyber Physical Systems. Digital Twins form one kind of Cyber Physical Systems and hence we take an approach going from here.
‘CPS are engineered systems that are built from and depend on seamless integration of computational algorithms & physical components.’– US National Science Foundation.
A digital twin is a virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process. The first practical definition of digital twin originated from NASA to improve physical model simulation of spacecraft in 2010.
‘The Digital Twin concept is having three main parts: a) physical products in Real Space, b) virtual products in Virtual Space, and c) the connections of data and information that ties the virtual and real products together.‘ – Michael Grieves
By having a real world existence, a virtual presence and data and information compensating for physical elements is a remarkable view, which we see as a major element in evolution of all systems in future. Inferencing both statistical and neural networks, ML and AI would play a significant role in this journey possibly helping us enable compensating concept.
